A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Thomas began his musical journey at an early age. First as a serious student of the piano, then switching to composition at the age of 13, he was writing for orchestra before leaving high school. After receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Composition, Thomas was awarded a full scholarship to attend the graduate-level film scoring program at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. There, he studied film composition with Jerry Goldsmith and continued his work in serious classical composition as well.
Thomas began his Hollywood career by working in the music department at Disney Studios. Soon after, he began finding work in the film composition world, first as an orchestrator, then as a composer. Thomas has composed scores for more than a dozen feature films including The Big Brass Ring (Orson Welles' final script starring William Hurt and Miranda Richardson). As a string arranger for pop albums, Thomas has worked with Poe, Michael Hutchence, Guns n' Roses, and The Cult, among others. In the television world, he created the exciting emotional music for Jerry Bruckheimer's hit series The Amazing Race.
Recently, Thomas conducted the Seattle Symphony recording his score for The Sisters. Upcoming projects include the Tim Roth African epic In the Shadow of Wings, which is currently shooting in Kenya and South Africa. Thomas is also working on his debut album, an array of modern orchestral works entitled Kounterpoint. Thomas shares his time between Los Angeles and Berlin.
