Carlo Giacco was born in Sydney on 22nd November 1972. In 1996 he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in music composition, from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Carlo has always had a passion for composing music for flim and television. His belief is that it is the greatest genre today for getting large audiences to listen to serious experimental music. In 1998 he was commissioned to score the music to his first feature film, the World War II drama 15 Amore with a 30 piece ensemble, which he also conducted. The Gatekeeper, his second feature film, was scored in New York (where he is now based) for a film on Mexicans fleeing illegally into the United States. This film was recently endorsed by Amnesty International and was a winner at the 2002 Santa Barbara Film Festival. Since his first feature film, Carlo has scored numerous films, including the acclaimed December Boys and Like Minds (Murderous Intent). Prior to moving the States, Carlo worked on many serious compositions including Lair of Caterpillar Blossoms, commissioned by Marshall McGuire and featured on his ninth CD Rough Magic. Entity, written for mixed ensemble octet, was premiered at the 9th Sydney Spring Festival and consequently won the award for Most Outstanding Original Composition. Aside from his serious compositions, Carlo has also composed for many television commercials including DHL, Toyota, NRMA, Qantas, Channel 7, and Westpac. In 1999 he was the winner of the British Design & Art Direction 'Silver Award' for his NRMA commercial 'Ladybird', which was also a previous winner at the 1998 Australian Advertising Awards, where it won a 'Silver Bullet' for Best Sound Track/Music. Other major achievements include working with the Hollywood film composer Howard Shore on the Director's cut of Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring; and composing for many National Geographic documentaries including Magnum Photographer - David Alan Harvey, Leonardo Da Vinci: The Man Behind the Shroud of Turin?, and Twister Tours, a documentary about people who chase tornadoes.
